What Is a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is an advanced hearing solution designed for people with significant hearing loss who receive limited benefit from hearing aids. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, cochlear implants bypass the damaged parts of the inner ear and directly stimulate the hearing nerve, allowing sound signals to reach the brain.

For many people, cochlear implants can improve speech understanding, make conversations easier, and help reconnect them with the sounds of everyday life.

Who Is a Candidate?

You may be a candidate for a cochlear implant if you:

  • Have severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss.
  • Struggle to understand speech, even while wearing appropriately fitted hearing aids.
  • Feel that hearing loss is limiting your work, relationships, or quality of life.

Today’s cochlear implant technology is available to more people than ever before, and many individuals who assume they’re “not deaf enough” are surprised to learn they qualify.

How Does a Cochlear Implant Work?

A cochlear implant has two main parts:

  • External Sound Processor: Worn behind the ear, it captures sounds, processes them, and sends the information to the implant.
  • Internal Implant: Surgically placed under the skin, it receives the signals and stimulates the hearing nerve, allowing the brain to interpret sound.

After implantation, the device is programmed and fine-tuned over time. Most patients also participate in listening exercises to help their brain adapt to hearing with the implant.

The Cochlear Implant Process

At HearCare, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

1. Comprehensive Evaluation

We perform detailed hearing testing, speech understanding assessments, and review your hearing history to determine whether a cochlear implant evaluation is appropriate.

2. Candidacy Assessment

If testing suggests you may benefit from a cochlear implant, we’ll discuss your options and coordinate with an experienced cochlear implant surgeon for additional medical evaluation.

3. Surgery

The implant is placed during an outpatient surgical procedure performed by an ear surgeon. Most patients return home the same day.

4. Activation

About two to four weeks after surgery, the external sound processor is fitted and activated. This is the exciting day you begin hearing through your cochlear implant.

5. Ongoing Programming and Rehabilitation

Your hearing continues to improve over time with regular programming appointments, hearing practice, and ongoing support from your audiologist.

Benefits of Cochlear Implants

Many recipients experience:

  • Improved speech understanding.
  • Easier conversations with family and friends.
  • Better hearing in challenging listening environments.
  • Increased confidence and independence.
  • Reduced listening effort and fatigue.
  • Greater participation in social activities.
  • Improved quality of life.

Every person’s experience is unique, but many patients describe cochlear implants as life-changing.

Cochlear Implants vs. Hearing Aids

Hearing aids amplify sounds so damaged ears can hear them more easily. Cochlear implants work differently by bypassing damaged hair cells within the cochlea and directly stimulating the hearing nerve.

For individuals whose hearing loss has progressed beyond what hearing aids can effectively treat, a cochlear implant may provide significantly clearer speech understanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too old for a cochlear implant?

Age alone is rarely a barrier. Adults in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s can successfully receive cochlear implants if they are medically appropriate candidates.

Will I still wear a hearing aid?

Some people continue wearing a hearing aid in the opposite ear, while others receive implants in both ears. Your audiologist will recommend the best solution for your hearing needs.

Is surgery safe?

Cochlear implant surgery is a well-established procedure with a strong safety record. Your surgeon will discuss the benefits and potential risks during your consultation.

Will my hearing return to normal?

A cochlear implant does not restore natural hearing, but it can provide meaningful improvements in speech understanding and communication for many people.
