What is Hard of Hearing?

“Anyone with hearing loss, regardless of severity, can be in the hard of hearing category, adds Sarah Lundstrom, an audiologist at HearCare Audiology Center in Florida. “You could say an individual is hard of hearing if they have hearing loss or perceive difficulty hearing,” she says.”

What are the Symptoms?

““No one person with hearing loss is the same; symptoms vary from person to person and level of severity of hearing loss,” says Dr. Lundstrom. However, symptoms of being hard of hearing may include the following, according to Rachel Raphael, an audiologist at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore:

  • Turning up the volume on the TV
  • Saying “huh?” or “what?” often
  • Asking people to speak up and repeat themselves frequently
  • Accusing others of mumbling or whispering
  • Having some form of phantom ringing, humming or hissing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Nodding or laughing to avoid embarrassment when conversations are inaudible
  • Withdrawing from social situations
  • Feeling isolated or depressed”
